Director's Letter
Dear Alumnae and Friends,
I hope this finds you well and enjoying some crisper days! Please fill out the Alumna Events form later in this newsletter so we will know your preferences for activities.
The Chorus has accomplished a great deal after having successful auditions this Fall, but we certainly miss our graduates and thank them for all they did to help us carry on. It’s always bittersweet when members graduate, but so wonderful to hear from or see them/you at our gatherings. We had a wonderful time at our Connections Sing-along in Fairfax Station in September. I really appreciate the help of Laura Harders, Kristin Bortner, and all the alums who came and shared food and music!
The current chorus has been working hard on repertoire for our 39th annual Candlelight Concerts and Family Weekend. Our featured selection for our December concerts is Snow Angel, a five-movement choral work that explores the themes of love, rebirth, and beauty through the eyes of children and the heavenly army of angels that watch over them. Haunting melodies and contrasts of major and minor tonalities permeate the accompaniment by cello and piano. The djembe adds a rhythmic and vibrant part in the fourth movement. Additionally, there are three narrators that augment the meaning of the music with their storytelling. The first is an older, wise angel who was sent to earth to gather light. A tattooed and hip angel follows, and speaks of compassion being out of fashion, and humans being unable to see the humanity in each person, past differences. The third angel, the youngest, tells us of making love and joy visible for her human friend. The wise angel then returns, proclaiming each of us contains the energy of generosity, compassion, and love, and that we should go forth, giving that light to others.
