Alumni History

Alumni & Friends

Holding the title as the oldest treble choral group at the University of Virginia, the Virginia Women’s Chorus (VWC) has amassed a rich alumni base spanning nearly five decades. Our alumni have gone on to pursue careers in music education, full-time opera, and arts administration with the Washington National Opera, while others have gone on to become change makers in non-music related fields such as medicine, law, education, finance, IT, politics, nonprofits, and more. Following their time singing in Charlottesville, alumni of the VWC have gone on to sing in a myriad of elite choral groups including Washington Master Chorale, The City Choir of Washington, Master Chorale of South Florida, San Francisco Opera Chorus, Fairfax Choral Society, Loudoun Chorale, Choralis, Carolina Harmony Chorus, Women’s Voices Chorus of Chapel Hill, Vocal Arts Ensemble of Durham, Harmony on the Sound Chorus of Fairfield CT, and more.

In 2009, a group of current VWC members worked with UVA’s Alumni Hall to co-found the Virginia Women’s Chorus Alumni Interest Group (AIG) Board of Trustees which today is known as the Virginia Women’s Chorus Alumnae & Friends Association (AFA). For nearly a decade and a half, the AFA’s mission has been to:

  • support the Virginia Women’s Chorus (the Chorus) in its continued pursuit of musical excellence and superior reputation within the University of Virginia (UVA), Charlottesville, and national choral committees;

  • promote communications and networking among alumni and friends of the Chorus;

  • promote the financial health and stability of the Chorus; and

  • foster lasting bonds of sisterhood among past and present members of the Chorus.
